Q. What is an email address made up of?
A. An email address consists of two parts - the UserName followed by the domain, separated by an “@” symbol. In the address the UserName represents the actual user, while the domain represents the server that is handling the mail (funnelwebinternet.com.au).
In this system, the email address wally@fwi.net.au is interpreted
as “wally, at funnelweb internet .com .au”. This means that the email is for
'wally' whose email is handled by FunnelWeb Internet.
The “.com” section of the domain indicates that FunnelWeb Internet is a commercial business, and the “.au” section indicates that it is in Australia. These sections change depending on the owner of the server – a United Kingdom educational institution server may have the suffix “.edu.uk”, for example.

Q. Can I get a second email account?
A. Yes. Your FunnelWeb Internet access account comes with one email account. If you require additional POP accounts, there is a small annual fee per account. Please contact FunnelWeb Internet for further information.

Q.
What is the difference between a POP account and an email alias?
A. A POP account is a
fully qualified mail account with it’s own UserName and password. All FunnelWeb
Internet accounts come with one POP account.
An alias is simply another name for your account, which is
used for email purposes only. While your FunnelWeb Internet UserName can have
a maximum of 7 characters, an alias can have a maximum of 50 characters.
For example if the user 'wally' wanted the email address of wallys.business@fwi.net.au
he could add the alias wallys.business to his account. If anyone then sent email
to wallys.business@fwi.net.au it would end up in the 'wally' account.
Aliases can be useful as they allow you to have multiple email addresses that
can be used for different purposes. For example you get an alias for work contacts
(wallys.business) one for general internet usage (wally.person) and keep your
real email address for only close contacts such as friend and family (wally).
It is common practice to have an alias for general use on the Internet, as
many sites often require you to enter an email address. Often in these cases
you start receiving unsolicited commercial email or spam to your account. By
using an alias email address you can simply change it if you receive too much
spam. Setting up a new alias is considerably easier than getting a new real
email address, as that requires the complete close down of your current account
and opening of a new one.
All FunnelWebbers are entitled to a maximum of 5 aliases on each FunnelWeb
Internet account. Setup is $11.00 per alias and FunnelWeb Internet offers 2
free setups.

Q.
What can I do about “Spam” or unsolicited email?
A. Unsolicited email or “Spam” as it known
is becoming more of a problem. The best way to avoid spam is to be very careful
about who you provide with your email address. However, it is easy to be caught
when entering your details into a website, or signing up for a newsletter.
There are a few methods you can use to combat unsolicited email. To track spam
to its real point of origin you need to copy what are known as the headers of
the email, which can be found in the "Properties" of the mail message. Once
you recover these headings there are organisation on the Internet that you can
report this information to.
Another way to beat spam is to use an alias address for newsletters and web
sites instead of your real email address. That way, should you get on a spammer's
mailing list you can simply drop the alias and get a new one, which is a process
far simpler than changing your real email address.

Q.
What is FunnelWeb Internet’s Mail Relay policy?
A. For anti-spam purposes our mail relay
policy is:
Only mail originating from inside our network address range will be allowed
relay. Even if the mail originates from inside our network address range it
must also be from our domain or one of the domains hosted by us. Any email that
appears to be coming from a domain not hosted by FunnelWeb Internet or Truenorth
Consulting will be rejected out right.

Q. What is web
mail?
A. Web mail is a web based email system
that allows FunnelWeb Internet customers to access their mail whilst at work
or on holiday.
The web based email system shows all the email that is currently sitting on our mail servers awaiting collection. It also allows you to send email to anyone just as you would from a normal mail program such as Outlook Express.
Web Mail may also be used to remove large emails from your mailbox that could be causing your normal mail program to time out.

Q. Why
do my emails bounce?
A. When emails “bounce” or not make it
to their correct location you should receive an error message from either the
FunnelWeb Internet mail server or from the receiving ends mail server. These
bounce replies usually contain all the information you need to explain why your
email did not make it to it’s desired location. Often the reason will be buried
in between what appears to be a lot of technical jargon, however the reason
itself is generally easy to understand.

Q.
Why can’t I send / receive my email?
A. If you are experiencing problems sending
or receiving your email please double check that both your incoming and outgoing
mail servers have been set correctly. The correct settings are below:
Incoming mail server: pop.funnelwebinternet.com.au
Outgoing mail server: smtp.funnelwebinternet.com.au
If you are having problems finding where these settings are located in your
mail program please check the relevant documentation in the support section
of the FunnelWeb Internet web site. Otherwise, please contact the support desk.

Q.
Why do I get emails from "Postmaster"?
A. Typically if you receive a message from
Postmaster it means that you have sent an email to an address that doesn't exist,
or that there is some sort of problem with your target address (it's temporarily
unavailable, for example). If possible, contact the person you are trying to
email and check their email address before trying again.

Q.
Why can't I receive big emails?
A. Some customers have an option similar
to "Do not download messages over 500k" or some other arbitrary size set in
their email client preferences. If you wish to collect larger emails you will
have to ensure that this option is switched off.

Q.
My mail software says it's downloading a message, but nothing appears even if
I wait for a few minutes. Why?
A. More and more people are using e-mail to send word documents and picture attachments. The inclusion of attachments in e-mails can make them very large in comparison to an e-mail, which consists of text only. If somebody has sent you an e-mail with a large attachment, you will have to wait long enough to allow the transfer to take place.

Q. My mail software keeps downloading messages I have already received. Why?
A. Your e-mail is not deleted from the mail server until the mail server has received acknowledgement from your computer that it has successfully received all of the e-mail waiting. This means that if the transfer of e-mail from the mail server to your computer is interrupted for any reason, you will need to download all of the messages again, not just the ones you didn't receive.

Q. I sent e-mail, and it was returned to me with a "failed mail" message. What does this mean?
A. Usually, a failed mail is the result
of a mistyped e-mail address. These can also occur if the e-mail address is
old, and the account no longer exists on the destination mail server. The reason
the e-mail "failed" is usually included in the failed mail message. If you need
help determining why a message failed, be sure to keep the failed mail message,
such that FunnelWeb Internet’s support desk gurus can refer to it.

Q. My mail server settings are correct, but when I try to send e-mail, I get a message telling me that I am not authorised to use this server, why?
A. In order to combat the misuse of our mail server by those who initiate unsolicited or junk e-mail, it has been necessary to enforce a number of security constraints upon the server. Two of these are:
- Anyone sending mail using via our mail server must have a valid FunnelWeb Internet E-mail Address.
- Anyone sending mail using via our mail server must have a valid FunnelWeb Internet IP Address.

Q. My Reply-To address is wrong. How do I change it?
A. If your Reply-To address has been incorrectly set within your mail program it could cause problems for people who are trying to reply to your emails. To fix this is a reasonably simple task.
Go to the “Tools” pull down menu and select “Accounts”. Once the Accounts window opens up, make sure that you are on the “Mail tab” and select your FunnelWeb Internet mail account.
Click the “Properties” button, which should open the properties for that account. On the “General tab” you should notice that there is a field called Reply Address. Make sure this is either set to your email address (e.g. wally@fwi.net.au) or is blank. This should prevent future problems with your Reply-To address.
- Netscape Mail 4.75 or earlier:
Go to the “Edit” pull down menu and select “Preferences”. On the left hand side go to the “Mail & Newsgroups” tree. Click on the cross to expand out the options.
Go to the “Identity” option. On the right hand side you should see a field labeled “Reply-to address”. Make sure this is either set to your email address (e.g. wally@fwi.net.au) or is blank. This should prevent future problems with your Reply-To address.
