Q. What is a Personal Web Directory and how do I access it?

A. A Personal Web Directory is an area on the web provided by FunnelWeb Internet that is available for you to use to put up a personal web site. For example, the page might contain information on your interests, pictures, links to your favourite sites, etc.

Its address will be of the form http://www.funnelwebinternet.com.au/userdir/wally, where “wally” is your UserName. When anyone enters this address into a web browser, it will search your Personal Web Directory for a file named index.htm or default.htm and, on finding it, will display its contents on the screen. This page is generally referred to as the default page or the homepage. It is almost like a contents page and can link to external web sites or other files within your Directory.

You can access your Personal Web Directory using your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape), software such as WS_FTP, or using secure web pages provided by FunnelWeb Internet in the My Account section of the web site.

Q. How do I make a web site?

A. Web sites are effectively a collection of HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) documents, along with possibly some images, multimedia or other files. To make a web site you need simply to write what you want to put online in one or more HTML files, add the images and other files, and then upload the pages to your FunnelWeb Internet Personal Web Directory.

HTML files can be created in a text editor (such as Notepad), but many specialist HTML editing programs (such as Macromedia Dreamweaver) exist to make it easier to create complex pages.

Q. Why don’t my images work after I’ve uploaded my homepage, but work when I preview it on my computer?

A. Most likely the path in your HTML documents is incorrect. If, for example, you specified the location of your image as “c:\website\image.gif”, then when you upload it the server will look for that directory and not find it. You need to think about where your images will be when they’re uploaded, and either specify their location relative to the HTML document (eg. “images/image.gif” for a file in the “images” directory beneath the current directory) or provide absolute locations for them in the form of an internet address (eg. http://www.funnelwebinternet.com.au/userdir/wally/images/image.gif).

It is also good practice to ensure that the image names in your HTML documents are identical to the names of your files (including upper/lower case letters). While many web servers are not case sensitive about file names, many are and they will not recognise a file linked with incorrect case.

Q. Why doesn’t my homepage come up when I go to its address?

A. The first page of your website must have the name of index.htm. This allows the web server to know this is the first page of your web site to display when you go to http://www.funnelwebinternet.com.au/user/wally for example.

Q. What are newsgroups and how do I access them?

A. Newsgroups are similar to an internet based “Bulletin Board” – an area where people can post messages that are publicly viewable, and as replies are posted a “conversation thread” develops.

There are newsgroups about every conceivable topic and they’re a great source of information. You can access newsgroups from most email clients (Outlook Express, Eudora etc.) and they can also be viewed via the web on the FunnelWeb Internet web site under the Services section.

Q. What can I do to censor the Internet for my kids?

A. On 1 January 2000, new Internet laws were introduced in Australia. FunnelWeb Internet has followed the guidelines suggested by the Internet Industry Association (IIA), which can be viewed at http://www.iia.net.au/guideuser.html.

These guidelines also list IIA approved Internet Content Filtering software that can be purchased and installed on your computer.

Another worthwhile site is http://www.cybersmartkids.com.au. This site will help you and your family to find out how to be cybersmart and use the Internet safely.

Q. What is the difference between software and hardware modems?

A. There are two very different types of modems in existence. One is the older style but much more reliable hardware based modem and the other are the newer but fraught with problems software based modems.

Software based modems don’t really have any hardware of their own to do the grunt work of processing Internet connection. Instead, they pass it off to specially written software, which utilises the CPU to do this work. This is very popular among manufactures as it means these modems are very cheap to make as they contain very little hardware. Software is generally cheaper to make than hardware.

Q. How do I read PDF documents?

A. To read PDF document you need the popular and freely available Adobe Acrobat Reader. This program can be freely downloaded from the Adobe web site. The most currently available place to download the reader is at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.html

Once you have installed this software you can easily read any PDF document sent to you or downloaded from the Internet.

Q. How do I browse the web?

A. When you open your web browser you will automatically be shown a default web site (typically the FunnelWeb Internet web site). This page, along with the others on the web, contains “hyperlinks” – highlighted or underlined areas of the page which, when clicked on, will direct your browser to a new site. You may browse the web simply by following these links, or you may use the power of a search engine site to receive a large number of links about a specified topic. Links to search engines can be found on the FunnelWeb Internet homepage or under the Services section.

Q. What is a web browser?

A. A web browser is a piece of software that allows you to “browse” the web. The two most common browsers available today are Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator. There are also other less well-known browsers available such as Opera, Neoplanet or Mozilla.

All browsers do perform pretty much the same function but offer a differing range of features or unique abilities. The most widely used browser is Internet Explorer.

Q. How do I go to a web site, if I have the address?

A. If you know a web sites address and you wish to visit it directly on the Internet all you need to do is open your browser and go to the Address or Location bar that usually runs under the navigation icons at the top of the page. Simply remove the address that is currently there and type in the one you would like to go. Press Enter or Return on your keyboard. If all goes well you should be taken directly to your requested web site.

Q. How do I disconnect from the Internet?

A. Often your computer will disconnect itself from the Internet when you close your web browser. However, it is still possible to disconnect manually, and it is necessary to do so if you choose not to let your browser disconnect you. In Windows, your dial up connection is represented by a small icon of two computer screens linked by a cable that appears next to the clock on your Start Menu bar. Double clicking this icon will bring up a connection window where you can command your computer to disconnect.
